Character Counter
Count characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words and lines instantly. Paste your text below and the numbers update as you type — then compare them with the limits for X, Instagram, YouTube and Google search results.
About This Character Counter
A character counter tells you exactly how long a piece of text is. That matters more than most people expect: a post on X is capped at 280 characters, an Instagram bio at 150, and Google usually shows only about 155 characters of a meta description before cutting it off. Going over by even a few characters can truncate a headline or stop a form from submitting.
This counter shows the total characters (including spaces and line breaks), the count without spaces, the number of words and the number of lines. Everything is calculated in your browser, so private drafts and client copy never leave your device.
How to Use It
- Type or paste your text into the live counter box.
- Read the character, no-space, word and line counts as they update.
- Compare the total with the limit for the platform you are writing for (see the table below).
- Edit until you are under the limit, then copy your text.
Common Character Limits
| Where | Typical limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| Instagram bio | 150 characters |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| YouTube video title | 100 characters |
| YouTube description | 5,000 characters |
| Google title tag (shown) | about 60 characters |
| Google meta description (shown) | about 155 characters |
| SMS (single segment) | 160 characters |
Platforms change their limits from time to time, and search engines truncate by pixel width rather than a fixed count, so treat these as practical guides and check the platform if the exact number matters.
